Choose a Computer Repair Tech
Overview:
Looking for your first computer repair tech or want tips on choosing the best on for you? Take advantage of this guide that will guide you through the process of
picking the a good computer repair tech and how to avoid the ones that might try to take advantage of you. The computer tech you go with will have
to be reliable, computer smart and last but not least, certified in the computer industry. Ask if they are at least, A+ certified. Getting on that is
certified isn't going to cost you more money, it just says something about the person and is proof that they are dedicated to computers. A+ certification isn't
an easy task and the computer tech should definetly have one!
Different Types of Computer Repair Services:
There are different types of computer repair services you can get. The most convienent is, remote service. This is where a computer tech will
connect to your computer over the internet and fix any computer at hand. The other 2 are more personal, the computer tech can either come to your home
or place of business or you can drop you computer off at computer repair shop. If you want to drop your computer off I'll explain how to prepair your
computer to take to the shop.
Prepair you computer:
Prepairing your computer to take to the computer repair shop is easier than you think.
If you have a laptop or notebook, then it is even easier. All you will need to take is the laptop/notebook and the power cord. For someone with a desktop
computer, you do not need to take anything but the computer box!(see the picture to the right) All you need to do to disconnect the computer box is to, get to the backside
of the computer and firmly grab each plug and pull them out individually. DO NOT yank them out because you could pull a wire lose from its connector.
Some plugs will have 2 finger screws on each side, just unscrew them with your fingers and then pull the plug out. The screws should still be intact to the plug.
You do not need to take notes on where everything was plug into because there is some tricks to knowing where they go. For one, they can only go in one way and
85% of the time only go into one plug. The ones that you can accidently swap is the keyboard with the mouse plug and also, the speaker and the microphone plug.
Those are color coated on both the plug and the back of the computer. When plugging in the keyboard and the mouse, the plugs have a flat side which should go toward
the center of the computer. The connections should all go in easily and not be forced because you could have them angled and bend the prongs.
Let Us Discuss Computer Repair Prices:
To get a good idea of what you should pay, call around and ask how much they charge per hour. Typically, a computer tech that is working for him or
herself will be cheaper than going with a company because the individual will have less overhead. In the next section I will discuss, how to talk to them, things to look
out for but, the final descision is yours.
Talkin to a Computer Tech:
computer techs that are new to the
business, might have trouble, and make the mistake of talking to you in a language that you simply, can not understand. They are still stuck in the books and will talk using technical computer
terms and really confuse you. The rule of thumb is, stay away from computer techs that do this. Even though they might be new and a great
computer tech, you don't know if they are trying to over sell you or to get you to pay for things that you do not need. Don't assume that someone
doesn't know what they are talking about if they do not use big computer terms. They are usually just being kind to your lack of knowledge and will be more
pleasing to talk to. On that same note, once you find a tech that is priced right and easy to talk to, do not hold anything back. What I mean is, tell them
exactly what you were doing when the problem occured. Trust me, they will not think you are an idoit. Telling them will help them to narrow down the problem
and end up costing you less because there will be less troubleshooting involved.
Now take the new knowledge you have obtained and go shopping!!
